Taiwan Itinerary Day 1: Taitung City

This year, in February, Jetstar was having a sale and tickets to Taipei was only $89 before adding the cost of baggage allowance. Since nobody ever gets tired of Taiwan, we knew we had to book those tickets! This time, we decided that we will be exploring Taitung, the eastern part of Taiwan.

Taiwan Itinerary Day 1: Taitung City

  • How to travel to Taitung City

For day 1 of our Taiwan itinerary, we will be travelling to Taitung. We reached Tao Yuan International airport at about 06:00 and took bus 1819 which took about 55 mins to reach Taipei Main station. The tickets cost NT 125 per pax.

Upon reaching Taipei Main station, we took the express train to Taitung and reached after 4.5 hrs.

HAN-dy tips:

The high-speed train only serves the western part of Taiwan so do take note when planning.

Remember to buy food to feed yourself on the train ride, especially the 铁路便当, which are sold at the station itself but be fast, cause they do get sold out at the station, eventually. Fret not though, as they also sell them on the train itself. Yums!

  • How to spend one day in Taitung City

Finally, we reached Taitung train station! It was quite deserted, except for the passengers from the train.

There were a lot of cab drivers waiting outside the station and we went along with a female driver who charged us NT200 which was quite pricey but we weren’t good bargainers.

Our Airbnb Apartment

The accommodations in Taitung were comparatively cheaper than that in Taipei. We booked our Minsu via Airbnb, we stayed on the third floor of the building and there was no lift! They had lower floors but we chose our room as there was a balcony in the room. The price was about $80 for 1 night and the room looked exactly like the pictures shown!

Exploring Taitung City

The minsu had free bicycles for guests to ride around the city, which was really a kind gesture as it was a bit far away from civilization by walking.

We cycled around the Taitung city which was quite small and spent our time mainly at the Railway Art Village.

Taitung Tourism Night Market

At night, we visited the Taitung Tourism Night Market where we had street foods and one of the more recommended food was the grilled beef and chicken sold by one small and temporarily-looking stall next to Watsons. Had to wait for about 30 mins but totally worth the wait. Due to the long wait, we were too hungry to take photos of our dinner!

Had our fill at the night market and bought a box of 6 custard apples at the train station the next day for NT700 and had to lug it around like my precious for the rest of the trip.

HAN-dy tip: Taitung city is famous for its custard apples which are oh-so-heavenly. Hence, you can see them being sold everywhere in the night market which was much cheaper than those found in Taipei. Remember to try them if you haven’t!

With that, we ended day 1 of our Taiwan itinerary in Taitung.
