Accommodations in Iceland

Nights 1 and 2

Had two nights booking in an Airbnb apartment with two bedrooms, located in Reykjavik. Due to our flight delay in Dubai, we only managed to stay on the second night, which was New Year’s Eve and the whole neighborhood lit the night sky up with their firework displays. Crazy spectacular.

The apartment was cozy and clean. The kind host was just staying nearby and waited for us until late hours due to our delay. Was really well equipped but pity we only spent a few hours in the apartment as we arrived late and left early.

Night 3

Spent a night at Icelandair Hotel in Vik which was newly renovated and had a loft. In total there were four beds. The hotel has to be one of the nicest we stayed throughout our stay. It also had a tall window looking into Icelandic nature but we didn’t make good use of it during our stay as it was kind of dark and scary outside. Maybe that’s why we didn’t catch the northern lights. Hmm.

Night 4

Hali Country hotel was the pickup point for our Vatnajökull Glacier Blue Ice Cave Tour‎. It was very simple and adequate but they have the best views, or just simply ’cause we managed to catch the sunset at the hotel.

Night 5

Stayed one night in Fosshotel Núpar, located in Kalfafell, which looked nicer in the pictures of their listing. The receptionist’s attitude was meh but they provide northern light wake up call. Slept throughout the night soundly. Tried exploring out on our own and waited for a while but didn’t have any luck with the lights again. The room itself was really simple and it was a container kind of hotel so we had a large snowfield at the back of our room.

Night 6

Begun heading back to Reykjavik for our golden circle tour. Spent one night in this apartment called Thoristun Apartments in Selfoss. Back to civilization with plenty of shops nearby. YAYS! The owner was a local who helped us decide between the difficult choice of Secret Lagoon or Blue Lagoon. We went to the Secret Lagoon as per her recommendation but a part of me can’t help feeling that we should have been a true tourist and visited the Blue Lagoon. Maybe next time!

Night 7

Stayed near the airport in Hotel Keflavik as we didn’t want to waste another day on car rental and this hotel provided complimentary airport transfers. The hotel was quite old on the outside and we had some problems with locking and unlocking the door but overall, the room was relatively new and sufficient for a one night stay. They had complimentary coffee in the reception area and had the best breakfast if you are a fan of smoked salmon (I AM!) Otherwise, the breakfast consisted mainly of non-hot food items since they had to cater to tourists leaving really early in the morning.

Spent a total of about SGD$1600 for the seven nights of accommodation and am quite satisfied with our stay in each place. Just wish we could have been luckier but hey, the weather was kind to us the whole time and only started snowing a lot on our last day. Guess it’s true about giving and taking in life. Cheers!
